Grateful in all Circumstances

The first thing I’d like to say in this newsletter is thank you!  Thank you for choosing to spend a little time listening to or sharing a single episode or being a loyal follower of the show with each new episode every other week!  By the end of 2025 we will have 125 shows in the library and over 10,000 downloads in over 52 countries!

The mission of “Wrestling with the Inner Man” is to help others, but especially young men who might have grown up without a coach or model to teach them what healthy positive masculinity looks like.  Our culture hasn’t produced a very good example in decades and that has resulted in an awareness issue, which could also be called a “teachability” issue.

I met Dr Bryan Hurlbutt at a Men’s Conference in September where he delivered the keynote address on “Teachability.” Proverbs 1:5 says, Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance.” So, even the wise must continue to increase in learning which means that maturity is not marked by arrival but by continual openness to correction and instruction.  In other words, the mark of a true disciple is not how much he knows but how much he is willing to keep learning.  Pride is a ceiling that blocks growth, while humility is the soil where wisdom takes root. This message convicted me personally and deeply!  Check out his show at the link below to see how teachable you are and to recognize the five attributes of an untaught man.

My second guest this month has been on the show previously. Dr Michael Sprague is the Chaplain of the Capitol Commission of Louisiana and author of “Disaster: Betting the Farm on God in Life’s Storms.” In his book he relates his personal experience in living through Hurricane Katrina in August of 2005.  Earlier this year, he experienced another challenging storm, an aggressive form of prostate cancer diagnosis.  We discuss how Michael has remained thankful in the midst of the unpleasant circumstances of a cancer diagnosis, treatment, and beginning the recovery phase.  His transparency and desire to share so that others who might walk a similar path can be encouraged is nothing short of remarkable.  We added a little bonus segment with his unique insight on the parallel path of the government shutdown that took place at the same time while he was going through his cancer treatment.

Wrestling With Teachability

Jonathan Edwards once said, ‘the man who thinks he has sufficient knowledge shows his ignorance.” Are you still willing to keep learning?

Wrestling With Giving Thanks

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you genuinely wrestled with being thankful?

Perhaps after being laid off at work due to AI?

Maybe the tyranny of inflation and falling behind on debt and expenses?

Or something worse like a cancer diagnosis?
