News David Savage September 30, 2025
On September 10th a very bright light in our world was violently taken from us in the person of Charlie Kirk. I met him briefly in July of 2024 as a delegate at the National Republican Convention in Milwaukee Wisconsin. My wife Kim and I watched his memorial service last Sunday where his courageous and beautiful wife offered these words:
“My husband, Charlie, he wanted to save young men just like the one who took his life,” she said. “That young man, I forgive him,” she said as tears rolled down her face.
“Charlie passionately wanted to reach and save the lost boys of the West”
“Charlie perfectly understood God’s role for a Christian husband: A man who leads so that they can serve,” she said. “To all the men watching around the world, accept Charlie’s challenge and embrace true manhood. Be strong and courageous for your families.”
As something only God could orchestrate, my two guests this month lead two of the best men’s ministries that I have ever encountered. These two organizations, BetterMan and Toolbox Ministries, have missions exactly aligned with Erika Kirk’s challenge!
Dr Chris Harper is the CEO of BetterMan and we both share a passion for mentoring which requires intergenerational relationships among men. There are multitudes of young men in our society starving for the wisdom and experience an older man can offer. The 2003 movie “Secondhand Lions” starring Robert Duval and Michael Caine tenderly and humorously addresses this subject.
Tune in and hear our discussion about this extremely important topic and discover ways to overcome the awkwardness in seeking and finding a mentor. Learn more about Harp and BetterMan at www.betterman.com or visit his blog on Substack titled “the good trouble blog.”
Tom Douthit is the Executive Director of Toolbox Ministries whose mission is to help men in the marketplace come to know and follow Jesus. This organization has grown tremendously since Tom took the helm four years ago. As their strategic pathway they want men to hear an inspiring story… that leads to a meaningful conversation… that leads to a clear next step. They meet in the following seven cities: Houston (5 locations), Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Lubbock, College Station, Frisco, Atlanta GA, and Guadalajara Mexico.
In this podcast episode Tom and I talk about his wrestling match with a new season in his life and career, a milestone he and I both share. You can learn more about Toolbox Ministries by visiting their website at www.toolboxministries.com
One very popular tool they offer in today’s world of short attention spans is a weekly Two Minute Toolbox video. I was very honored to be asked to record one for them and it is my final offering in this month’s newsletter. It’s titled ‘Are You Using Your God-given Instinct?”
As we begin the 4th Quarter in October we also begin the vital nonprofit fundraising season.
