July is the month we all celebrate Independence Day, our 249th this year. If we truly desire to be the land of the free and the home of the brave we must maintain a sense of urgency about helping others escape the bondage of sin by bravely sharing the gospel to secure their freedom!
Both of my guests this month are extraordinary examples of men who have committed their lives to this purpose.
I met Ed Kinsey through a previous guest and friend, Eloy Huerta, at one of his Men 4 Jesus meetings in Alvin Texas. After visiting with Ed he followed up by sending me a copy of the book he had written called “Hospice Hymns: Touching Stories of Musical Therapy at Hospice Facilities.” What an amazing glimpse into people on the threshold of death and Ed’s commitment to leave no man behind on his way to heaven! We discuss several of his short stories with some goosebump moments and others where he left the room uncertain of where they may be going. He sang gospel music to all of them honoring a commitment he made to God in May of 1989 when he was shot on duty as a police officer. What a story of transformation in his own life! One of my favorite episodes of all time!

Omar Garcia, my second guest, is the Missions Pastor where I worship at Kingsland Baptist Church in Katy, Texas. He has served in this capacity at Kingsland for twenty years and has helped raise over $40 million for missions ministry across the globe. The slogan for missions is “Go Beyond” and Omar has certainly done that selecting unreached people groups for their first helping of Jesus across five continents. We discuss his sense of urgency, how he chooses missions partners, and and how he wrestles with those he has to leave behind due to laziness or ineffectiveness. He told me “If a church always spends money on what saved people want, you never have enough money for what lost people need.” Omar has one of the most infectious personalities of anyone I have ever met but make no mistake about how seriously he takes his mission!

Toolbox Ministries continues to put out terrific Two Minute Toolbox videos weekly and I’m sharing another one this month from Trey Little. If you haven’t heard the U.S. Mint is discontinuing manufacturing of the ubiquitous penny, the lowest denomination of our coin currency. Trey’s message “A Penny for Your Thoughts” is a super reminder of your worth in our Lord’s eyes, regardless of what other people may think of you.
